Field Study Conducted to Investigate Typical Interactions with Pedestrians

What happens, if autonomously driving delivery robots are driving at the footpath? How do pedestrians react? In Autumn and Winter 2021/22 the Chair Individual and Technology (iTec) conducted a study to investigate typical interactions between pedestrians an autonomously driving delivery robots.

The study was conducted with a remote-controlled mock-up driven by a hidden experimenter to let the mock-up appear to drive autonomously. While driving the mock-up two cameras filmed the interactions between the mock-up and incidentally co-present person (e.g., pedestrians). The videos will be analysed to find typical interactions between pedestrians and autonomously driving delivery robots.
